About City Farmer

Shoemakers, fashion models, computer geeks, politicians, lawyers, teachers, chefs … all city dwellers … all can grow food at home after work in back yards, community gardens or on flat roofs. For the past 30 years, City Farmer has encouraged urban dwellers to pull up a patch of lawn and plant some vegetables, kitchen herbs and fruit. Our message is the same today as it was in 1978 and will be relevant far into the future. 

This website is a collection of stories about our work at City Farmer here in Vancouver, Canada, and about urban farmers from around the world.

The site is maintained by City Farmer executive director, Michael Levenston.

Welcome to Geelong Hydroponic Gardening Inc.

This group was established as a non-profit organisation dedicated to disseminating information about hydroponics and related topics to its members.

It is managed by a committee elected by its members and all office bearers serve in an honorary capacity.

We are the largest hydroponic hobbyist group within Australia, proudly encompassing South Australian Hydroponic Gardening members as well. This group also encompasses aquaponic culture as well as hydroponic.

The members of the Geelong Hydroponic Gardening Inc. enjoy monthly meetings. These meetings are held at the Geelong Botanical Garden meeting rooms at 9.30am on the 1st Sunday of each month, Feb-Nov., Dec. being our Christmas break-up. To find these rooms it is easier to use the back entrance off Holt Rd. Visitors are always welcome.

Members enjoy the free use of books, videos and dvd's from the Geelong Hydroponic Gardening Inc. Library on a monthly borrowing basis.

Farm visits provide an opportunity to help diversify members gardening interests.

Members also receive a bi-monthly newsletter and are invited to contribute items of interest. This is a great way to request specific information on articles.

Information talks are also provided to any interested clubs, societies and groups etc.

You will find no publicity on the information pages.

Anybody who is actively practising Aquaponics, whether on a hobby or on a professional basis, is invited to send me their e-mail address and their website or blog information. I will post links to them on this and the following pages without charge.
Next to that, there will be room on one or several separate pages in a separate section for links to commercial sites of suppliers of whole systems and components. As I believe this to be valuable information too, the links as such will also be free of charge.

I hope that soon this team will be reinforced by others who believe in Aquaponics and wish to help me spread the idea and the knowledge.

When I saw his EarthTainer design I responded immediately with enthusiasm. One of its primary merits is that the EarthTainer holds 10 gallons of water and can go several days before needing replenishment. Also, no water is wasted, as it is a self contained, closed loop "eco-system" that most efficiently uses precious water. And it is a system that is easy to build and replicate for little cost.

We then arranged to film the construction of an EarthTainer, made by the two of us, with the intention of sharing the idea as well as the plans for building the EarthTrainer with gardeners around the world... as "Freeware."
