Questions And Answers About Hydroponics

  Mission

Right around the time a barrel of oil was around $150 USD I stumbled upon an article from an "expert" saying that the solution to resolve hunger was to give more money to poor countries in order to buy more tractors and more agrochemicals! So wrong! Then a thought popped into mind: " Do something! No matter what! Anything is better than nothing! ". Mission: increasing awareness of hydroponics and aquaponics as key tools in fighting hunger around the world.

Hydroponics Questions?

Hello everyone!  How I got into hydroponics is a long story...let's just say that it involves a lot of tedious farm work as a child, unsuccessful 'dirt' gardens of my own and a near electrocution from a semi-submersible hydroponic pump.  I've learned that hydroponic gardening is the only way to garden for me and I've been working at it for several years now.  I've built ebb/flow, nft, Mittleider, wick and passive systems and I'm always on the lookout for the easiest and most efficient means of hydroponic gardening...If you have questions, I would be more than happy to answer them...

Open Question: Am i the only one to do this?
I'm using hydroponics to grow mint, but I am using NO substrate. It is a plant with it's roots in water. Every hydroponic set-up I have seen used something like moss for a substrate, whereas I am using nothing but fertilized water. Is there anyone else doing this, the plants are doing remarkably well.I started this because I wanted to grow mint in a contained environment, as my side yard smells like toothpaste when it is mowed. I had no dirt, and I knew how spearmint will grow on river/lake/pond/stream/any body of water banks so I thought "hey, how about hydroponics" but I had no substrate and thus this happened.

Open Question: Growing flax seed using hydroponics?
I would like to grow flax seeds to use in my recipes for pancakes and muffins, is it possible to grow these using hydroponics? Or just grow them using soil? Could anyone tell me how or perhaps give me a link? Thanks!

Open Question: Hydroponics substrate advice anyone?
So i have a hydroponics system set up in my house using old fish tank equipment i had lying around, and i'm trying to grow some chili's in it. The problem is what sort of substrate would act best for the plant, i have a lot of that Eco-soil stuff (polymer beads that expand in water 100x) and some clay balls left over. any advice or previous experience? cheers.

Open Question: Best designs for Home made Hydroponics?
I have seen a few videos on YouTube of some hydroponic set ups made from PVC and would like to try setting up my own. Are there any more designs and perhaps home made recipes of the plant food so I will not have to pay $80 to several hundred dollars for the chemicals?

Open Question: Where can I buy Hydroton in Kansas?
I live in western Kansas (out near Hays), and I would rather not pay some online place as much as to ship Hydroton 50L bags to me as I pay to buy them in the first place. I realize that growing medium isn't light, so I was hoping to find a place, even if it's several hundreds miles away, at which I could buy Hydroton in bulk. I've spent the last two hours searching Google (and mostly finding only thinly disguised link farms). Does anyone know of a hydroponics supply store in western Kansas (or in Kansas at all)?

Open Question: Hydroponics related questions?
Ok well my first question is if you built a multistory building the size of a typical farm, depending on the stories could you double and triple the production of that one area of farming, making it more efficient on the enviroment? and could you grow plants that give the same nutrients as the nutrients needed in water/nutrient solution? I'm guessing only hydroponic experts or farmers would be able to answer this but i'll take anything

Open Question: Can you grow Kentucky Blue Grass hydroponically ?
I was thinking if I could grow this species of turf hydroponically using solvents that contained phosphorous, Potassium, and Nitrogen (and maybe some trace compounds) I could theoretically pull it off. Has it been done before? It's hard to research cause hydroponics has become so synominous with growing hydroponic marijauna (which I am not all interested in)

Open Question: Should I age the water before adding live plants to a freshwater aquarium?
I pulled an old tank, pump, light, and all the rest out of my basement a few days ago and I've been working on planning how to set up the aquarium. I wanted to try growing live plants because I though it'd be an interesting thing to try so I'm going out today to buy gravel and some chemicals to help age the water but I was wondering if I could place the plants in the tank when I put in the gravel or should I buy and put the plants in the after the water has aged and an algae colony has stabilized? The light I found for the tank seems to be a pretty standard fish lamp that goes on top of the tank's lid. Would this be suitable for growing live plants or should I try to find a "grow light" in a pet store that would fit the lamp? I have a big grow light in my basement because I've been experimenting with hydroponics (or at least planning to, my catnip seedling died before I could transplant them to the hydroponics pod) and I know it uses special wave lengths (blues and reds) so it comes out as a black light. So aside from my original question, would the standard light that I found with the tank be able to grow live plants? Also, any interesting ideas for decorating the tank, it's hexagonal and about two feet tall or so and I'm trying to make it look pretty trippy or at least interesting. Thanks a lot for both of the answers but I've got another question.Would the plants release ammonia or should I do what Fishless's article suggested and add concentrated ammonia? Would doing that harm the plants?

Open Question: RESUME HELP!!!!!!!!!!?
I finished my resume and it's perfect, almost! I need help on a few things though still. For my experience i'm putting down I worked at this greenhouse hydroponics store where I used to co-op. The guy said I could put I worked there he didn't care. But i'm currently working at a nail salon. I'm putting down both for experience but what do I put? Like do I put the name and then what? Do I put a address, phone number, from the time I started working there to the time I finished, etc etc? Or do I only put the store and a brief explanation of what I did there? And if I do put a job description what do I put? I literally do everything at the nail salon so I can't just put "manicurist" or whatever.. And at the greenhouse store I did everything as well like growing veggies, plants, selling growing products and all the stuff. So can someone please help me out with what to put.AND LASTLY for references I have one of my teachers and the guy that i'm putting down for the greenhouse. My question for this is do I have to put their name address and phone number, or who they are to me aswell? And will it be weird if I put the same address and phone number for him in my references as I did for my experience? PLEASE ANSWER THESE THIS WILL HELP ME SOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH THANK YOU

Open Question: What types of Marijuana?
I started smoking weed and they have all sorts of names for weed. How do I tell them apart? What's the difference from Kush and Dro? Is Kush what you get using a hydroponics system or is Dro a type of weed? What are other things I should know?(I hate the fact how someone is always out there to say "weed is bad","weed kills you", I didn't ask if it was bad for you or if it kills you. So please focus on the question I asked with your undivided attention.)

Open Question: Financing or partnership in greenhouse and hydroponic lettuce operation?
I am looking for a lending institution who would finance me adding a hydroponic lettuce greenhouse on my farm. Our credit is ok but not awesome, average score of 680. We have 3 years experience in hydroponics. We have 25% of project amount for the system. We have been to the SBA and they approved our business plan for SBA support but had no lending options. 85k in farm equity and are looking for 75-85k in loan. What options do we have or interest is there?

Open Question: I need to pass drug test in 22 days, any suggestions how??? Will I be okay (read details)?
I use to be a constant user but was arrested in november of 2011. Since then I have quit and have not taken a hit till now. I smoked to impress a beautiful women (stupid me). I smoked around seven blunts of hydroponics in a two day span with friends on January 28. I have a probation test on the 22nd. I am in shape weighing around 165 and around 5'11', I also have been drinking plenty of water and will continue. I purchased Niacin but i recently read online that it does not work, I will purchase cranberry juice and eat little till the drug test. It looks as though I have tried everything, I will not be smoking anymore even after probation (to expensive), if anyone can please help or atleast tell me if I will pass or not I would greatly appreciate it.

Open Question: plants grown in soil vs hydroponics (ten points!!!)?
(1)Discuss the benefits of plants being grown in soil.......then talk about the drawbacks.(2)Discuss the benefits of plants grown through the use of hydroponics.......then discuss the drawbacks. (3)Now how does our use of freshwater (which we have access to less than 1% of on the planet) tie in with both of these? Which would result in less water usage?

Open Question: Does mold harm the plant?
I am growing a alyssum plant using hydroponics and i am doing a experiment in which I replaced water with Arizona iced tea. Three days later after previously planting the plants in tea i had seen incredible growth beyond my control group, so as just a common maintenance check, i looked at the inner part of the hydroponics device and it was molding. Does the mold contribute the growth?
