| Farm In A Box Aquaponics |
At the 2010 Southeastern Flower Show, Earth Solutions exhibits several aquaponic systems, the Mendocino, the Little Tokyo, a DIY Farm in a Barrel (modified Barrel-Ponic) system, along side a vermiculture bed for raising fish food and a newly designed raised container garden bed. The garden planter box is made of completely sustainable cedar wood and doesn't require any tools for assembly.

| Aquaponics And Food Safety |
Aquaculture provides approximately 20 million of the 140 million metric tons of fish and shellfish consumed in the world annually. The remaining 120 million metric tons are harvested from naturally existing populations, principally from marine fisheries, many of which are at their maximum sustainable yields, are in decline, or have completely collapsed. China dominates the world in the aquacultural production of fish and shellfish, of which more than half by weight are raised in China. However, several countries in Europe and North America are among the top 10 producers. Total global production by aquaculture is expected to grow from 20 to 55 million metric tons by 2025, with no increase, and possibly even declines, in harvests from the capture fisheries (Georgiadis et al, 2000). | Open Question: Does anyone else believe that Doomsday Preppers are ultimately selfish? |
Tonight I was watching Doomsday Preppers. It was first time viewing this show so maybe what I saw was not the norm, but I got the distinct feeling that these people only wanted to help themselves. In the episode there were two men in the same community independent of each other who were pioneering aquaponics gardening. One of the men was doing this because he thinks that in the near future there will be a backlash against genetically modified foods hence a chronic shortage of food. So what he's done is created a closed loop garden where he raises carp as food, the carp produce waste which is then used as fertilizer for the plants and the water is then filtered with various kinds of edible water plants. He stated that he's spent $20,000 so far on this project. Here's my problem: if this man is so sure that there will be a food shortage then why doesn't he devote his energy to ensuring that this shortage doesn't happen? He has a working model of of a system that could potentially usurp factory farms and he just squirrels it away in a shed. Why doesn't he take some the energy and money he's devoted to paranoia and adapt this working model into a larger scale that can be used to feed mankind while not screwing up our environment in the process.

| Open Question: How do they suspend plants in water for hydroponics? |
My school has aquaponic system, a combination of aquaculture (growing aquatic animals in a tank to be harvested) and hydroponics (growing plants suspended in water w/ no soil) so that the feces of the fish fertilize the plants. We do it the unusual way, we grow them in gravel, the fish are gown in a separate tank and the water is pumped into the plants gravelSorry for bad grammar and spelling, I'm using my ipad to type this and its not as easy as it seems
